A guide to Skip

Thanks for coming to read my blog. This is the logical progression of a web design style I began back in the late 1990's with my original website, http://www.reddywhip.org/ where I kept an online journal, before "blogging" became popular. That site went through several revisions and is now just a redirector to this blog.

As of September 2008, I really don't lock my posts anymore, but I'm not gonna go back and unlock things.

I use my "friends-list" as an access control list. I plan to be fairly liberal with adding people to the list. The only real barrier to reading my blog is dropping a note saying "hi". Responses to this entry are screened, so feel free to write what you want.

Since its introduction, I've tried to make diligent use of Livejournal's tagging feature Buy me something, it'll make you feel better:

Rubber in the rain
"After you put your clothes back on, think I can get a business card?"

It's really cold in this conference.  It's nice outside, but they've got the A/C cranked up and I must be in the line of one of the vents.  So I ducked under a table to quickly pull on one of the swag t-shirts I've got under my polo shirt.  Well, as I popped up, tucking my polo back in, I got a woman come up to me and ask me that.

That was just weird.

Work woes/training

Rubber in the rain
Well, while I'm in Austin for Supercomputing 08, I'm already looking for my next training for work.  I was hoping to arrange for training in San Jose next month, but that's not going to happen.  Congress hasn't passed a budget which means lots of things are now on continuing resolution.

The class I want to take, on Lustre, is being offered in April and June...  I won't be able to take the course in Chicago, so that looks like it'll be in St. Paul, MN.  Do I know anyone actually in or near St Paul?

Snarkometer update

I've been watching some new shows of late, and this has required an alteration of my Snarkometer. After deliberation, I have decided to add a level, making it a 10 point scale. I still haven't filled in level 4, though. I've created a new level 9 and bumped 9 to 10.
10.Godwin's Law
9.Anyone from House M.D.
8.Dr. Perry Cox from Scrubs
7.Cuttler (a co-worker)
6.Emergency Room Psych Doc (courtesy of [info]txkink)
5.Julia Sugarbaker from Designing Women
4.
3."Angry Dan" (a co-worker)
2.Daniel Jackson / Jack O'Neill (with 2 L's) banter
1.Background radiation
As you can see, I still have one entry left to fill in.

Google define:snarky says "A colloquialism meaning short-tempered or snappish.". And meter, meaning "measurement of".

48 hours to Austin

Cicero
. . . give or take. I fly out early on Saturday morning to begin my trip to SC08, the supercomputing conference being held in Austin, TX this year. I'm there Saturday through Friday, flying out Friday evening to Chicago for some fun. Let's see if I can let my hair down. I'll be up in Wheeling, IL hanging out with some furverts at MFF. I fly home on late Monday eve.

New favorite tv show on Vet's Day

Mojo HD has a spiffy show called Survival School. It's following a bunch of airmen through SERE training. The few episodes I've seen have been damned hot. There's one of the instructors has this amazing spider web pattern tattoo on his back that you can see as he's zipping in and out of his wetsuit.

Makes me glad I don't have to do SERE, that stuff is sick. Makes me appreciate the folks who do go through the training. They are some damned tough cookies.

Thanks guys.

Rubber in the rain

So a week ago, I was going through my Southwest account to confirm information about my Austin trip next weekend. Well, while looking, I found a round trip award ticket that was slated to expire by Nov 20, while I'm in Austin. Not wanting to waste it, I hopped a flight to Chicago this weekend.

[info]chgolthr picked me up from MDW at the ungodly hour of 9:30 am on Sat morning. We grabbed brunch with a bunch of the usual crew then went wandering around, winding up at the Cellblock. After a bit of public sluttery at the bar, I went back to Joe's place for a nap... This was about 3pm.

Sat night after dinner, Joe and I went off to the Cellblock to watch the travesty that was the "wet" portion of the show. Well, travesty is a bit strong... but the constant flashes were dizzying and seemed to be communally high on something... Some weirdness with a gourd.

We cut out early to head to Hole... and I wished I'd brought some toys with... I think I should head to Chicago some time and try out Hole on a normal weekend... May be more fun than the clubhouse.

There was several hotties there... A boy from NY that i'd not metin NY before and a local cutie. I don't know if the local appreciated the description I gave, but it was intended as a compliment... "preppy nerd rubber skinhead". He was young, 20's, with glasses, wearing a nicely fitting catsuit and bleachers and braces over that... He looked pervy AND corruptible at the same time... Hot.

Yesterday was showtunes at sidetrack, and most of the Chicago family was there. My continuing plan to merge (or at least introduce) the family and my other friends in Chicago failed, as they never left the hotel room. I was enjoying myself at Sidetrack, but kinda got a was fuzzy from someone telling me to heel... Spceifically, "Come, now". Maybe it was being worked up from showtunes, or slushies but I was literally err skipping off down the road (out of sight of friends ( the fact now ruined by this post ) ). I dunno know which was better, that he did it, or he knew it's work. And no, that won't work for everyone or even most people, so don't get ideas. So yah, had a great weekend... And perfect timing, my flight is boarding.

EOL'ing old hardware

I've gotta find a polite way to tell my user community that they've got a couple of months to move off of a system before we axe it. It's an old Enterprise 6500 from Sun Microsystems... Sun hasn't sold one of these puppies since 2003. We don't have a support contract on the hardware, so we're moving from 24 UltraSparc procs to two dual quad Xeon systems.

I'm gonna have to get a back-hoe and a company of Marines to dig these scientists out of their entrenched holes.

Holy fucking crap.

[info]roadster_guy's post is just the straw that broke the camel's back.

How dare anyone use the "because I don't want it myself" argument. I've now been told by this by multiple men who engage in homosexual intercourse as well as sadomasochistic activities. The issue isn't if you want to do it. It's that you have the right to do it.

If you want rights, you have to fight for it. It wasn't that long ago that people were arrested and jailed for sodomy. You can't just sit by and hope that things happen slowly, eventually.

I have no time for, no use for people who think it's okay to legislate hate. I will have nothing to do with someone who thinks it's okay to put into law that my relationship is any less important than theirs.

If you still think that we should have our rights removed, remember the words of Martin Niemöller:

In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.

Let me know now, so I can cut you out of my life and focus on people who I can care about.

Nipples r us

Okay, so a day or two after the poll about my nipples being constantly crusty, they stopped. They're still tender/sensitive, but they're not crusty anymore. And light flicking and tugging and grabbing is still good to make me come a little faster when wanking.

Very nice.

Saison de thé

tea
Temperatures have dropped and I'm cold this morning, though everyone else in my office is comfortable or even warm. I've started to break out the tea more often. Today's blend is "Magic Spice" from McNulty's. It's a fruity tea, though cinnamon is the strongest aroma when you first smell it. The smells are followed by apple and possibly some kind of berry. There seems to be hibiscus for coloring. The brew has a red hue, bordering on lavender or mauve.

Election aftermath: Donuts and Ireland

  • Nov. 5th, 2008 at 9:31 AM
tea
I bought celebratory donuts & bagels for my co-workers this morning. It was celebrating the end of election season (and Obama's win): Boston cream, bavarian, vanilla... All tasty tasty. I like the description I had for the vanilla cream... "Sugar coated fried cake injected with liquid sugar fat to the point it drips out the end." I really wanted one.

I had a tea with splenda and milk instead. I'm not celebrating. FL, AZ and, I'm sad to say, CA all decided that my relationship with Chris ([info]rocketpup) is wrong and should not be legally recognized.

This reminded me of something that has been bandied around the family for years. It is possible, and legal, for a person with a grandparent born in Ireland to apply for Irish citizenship based on that lineage. This route of acquiring citizenship counts as a Dual Nationality per the US Department of State, and isn't an expatriating act.

What does that mean? If I get the citizenship, I can go to any EU country and work there without a visa. It means that if Chris and I are there and get married, it will be acknowledged and honored. Wouldn't mean squat here, still.

I'm not planning on moving, but this has made me thing that I should keep my options open.

Voting results

football thinking
So I cast my vote this morning. I just couldn't get over his poor handling of the repressive political right.

I liked my guy's plan for public service in exchange for education.

I didn't like their guy's flip-flopping on his stance on religious involvement in politics. First denouncing certain leaders, then later embracing them.

I like that my guy is an ethnic minority in this country. Proves that anyone can be president.

I don't like the way their guy has handled nuclear regulation in the past...

Sorry, Artie Vinick, but I'm supporting Matthew Santos for president!

Piercing healing

I'm curious about people who have piercings. I've had my nipples pierced since July 4th weekend this year. My left nipple is healing slowly but deliberately. My right nipple's been having issues. It kinda split along the side once. That seems all healed up now, but they're still crusty.

I had so little interest in girls I didnt' think about asking anyone to the prom until it was too late. My first real male interest wouldn't happen until that summer

We ended up sharing a limo with a this mis-matched couple that I don't remember... she was 4'11, he was 6'7". It was freakish.

Anyway, some college friends once saw this pic and said "That's not Skip, that's Reddy. John Reddy. Dum dahdahdum dadum." (bond theme music hummed here )
